Deer pressure

Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

The deer pressure is on.  This year they are eating our onions!  They are trying things they didn’t care for last year like peppers, tomatillos and onions.  We started growing onions because the deer didn’t appear to care for them.  Not this year!

We’ve put the bird netting on our carrots, peppers and beets.  The other deer loving items like blueberries, grapes, strawberries, cabbage, lettuce, kale….they are all inside our deer proof fence.

We need several dogs…

Blueberries right around the corner

organic strawberries

We have always been organic and this is our second year being certified organic by Oregon Tilth.    But this year we are noticing so much on our farm that we have not seen before.  We have bluebirds for example and we saw turquoise colored dragonflies in the greenhouse.  I tried to take a picture but didn’t know how to use the macro mode.  Next time…  Of course we have tons and tons of bees and all varieties of bumble bees.  Bev of Birds and Bees said she has a book on bumble bees to help identify the different varieties.

The big thing this year though is strawberries.  When my sister eats “conventional” strawberries her face turns numb.  My 8mo old neice had conventionally grown strawberries she broke into a rash, four days later the rash was still lingering.  I’ve heard don’t eat too many strawberries or else you will get sick.  Strawberries are not supposed to be bad for us, they are PACKED with nutrion.  One little strawberry has 13 vitamins plus folate, fiber, etc.

When my sister eats organic strawberries her face doesn’t turn numb.  She loves, loves, loves our strawberries.  She picked some yesterday and dropped some off for our poor 8mo old neice.    An 8mo old should eat strawberries, lots and lots of them.  They are so good for us!  It took us two weeks but we have finally finished planting 2,000 more strawberries inside our deer fence.  It is a beautiful sight.

Plant some strawberries and enjoy your own organic goodness!
